What usually causes it.
In roughly the order I check them. Knowing the likely causes is what makes a fix fast rather than exploratory.
Unoptimised images
The most common single cause of poor Largest Contentful Paint. Full-resolution JPEGs where a right-sized WebP would do, with no dimensions set so the layout shifts as they load.
Too many plugins loading everywhere
Plugins that enqueue their scripts and styles on every page, including pages that never use them. Twenty plugins can easily mean a megabyte of unused assets per request.
No caching, or caching configured wrongly
Either nothing is cached, or caching is enabled in a way that breaks the cart and admin. Both are common; the second is worse.
Slow database queries
Unindexed queries from a plugin, autoloaded options bloat, or a transients table that has grown to hundreds of megabytes. This is usually what makes wp-admin slow.

Will a caching plugin fix this on its own?
Partly, and it will not fix a heavy theme or oversized images. Caching makes a fast site faster; it cannot rescue a page that ships four megabytes of assets.
How much faster will my site get?
It depends what is wrong, and I will tell you after measuring rather than promise a number upfront. Sites with unoptimised images and no caching typically improve dramatically; sites already well-built improve less because there is less to fix.
Do I need to change hosting?
Sometimes, and I will say so honestly if the server is genuinely the limiting factor. Usually it is not — most slow WordPress sites are slow because of what they ship, not where they are hosted.
